National Instruments NI-9234 Sound and Vibration Input Module

The NI-9234 (Part Numbers: 779680-01, 779680-03) Sound and Vibration Input Module has four simultaneously sampled analog input channels and is designed to perform precise measurements from Integrated Electronics Piezoelectric (IEPE) sensors. The only difference between the two part numbers is that part number 779680-01 is not conformal coated, while part number 779680-03 is conformal coated for protection against environmental contaminants. The dynamic range of this module is 102 dB. The input channels sample at rates as fast as 51.2 kS/s per channel. Other specifications of this model include 24-bit resolution, 50 g shock resistance, and 5 g vibration resistance. The device weighs 6.1 oz (173 g).

The NI-9234 C Series Module comes equipped with built-in anti-aliasing filters that automatically adjust based on the user-specified sampling rate. This Sound and Vibration Input Module is compatible with CompactDAQ and CompactRIO platforms, as well as a single-module USB carrier (NI USB-9162). The compatibility with these platforms makes the NI-9234 well-suited for mobile and portable applications, such as in-vehicle noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) testing, and industrial machine condition monitoring. Additionally, this module can be swapped between platforms without requiring software modifications.

When the NI-9234 module is combined with an NI USB-9162 carrier, it functions as the NI USB-9234. This two-part module can be connected to a computer via USB and mounted to a panel. The NI USB-9234 supports both floating and ground-referenced signal sensors.

The NI-9234 requires NI-DAQmx 9.2 or later and must have the driver software installed before use. After installing the software, the user must install support for their preferred Application Development Environment (ADE), which may include LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C/C++, C#, or Visual Basic .NET. The module features four BNC connectors for signal input.

Both the NI-9234 and NI USB-9234 use analog and digital filtering to provide accurate in-band signal representation while rejecting out-of-band signals. The filters function based on three key bandwidth ranges: passband, stopband, and anti-aliasing bandwidths

National Instruments NI-9234 Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: When I am applying a constant force, why is my load cell linked to the NI-9234 giving readings that delay greatly?

Answer: This may be happening because numerous load cells and external power supplies have AC Coupling circuitry, which is meant to discard DC noise parts from the external power supply. Sometimes this can cause the signal to decay exponentially. The choices you have are to either use sensors that do not have AC Coupling circuitry or if you require external excitation, pick a power supply without AC Coupling circuitry.

Question: Can I access the TEDS information from the NI-9234 without programming the FPGA?

Answer: Yes, you can access TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheet) information from the NI-9234 in scan mode when using CompactDAQ. However, when using CompactRIO, TEDS is only accessible in FPGA mode because scan mode on CompactRIO does not support TEDS data retrieval.

Question: Why do I have to set a rate and begin an acquisition when using the NI-9234 module with a CompactRIO?

Answer: The NI-9234 is a Dynamic Signal Acquisition Module, which utilizes Delta Sigma converters and an oversample clock. It must use the anticipated sample rate to configure the oversample clock. Beginning the acquisition resets the module and applies the rate setting.

Question: Why is my module providing a different sample rate from the one I selected?

Answer: The NI-9234 has discrete sample rates. Correct sample rates from this module will go by this formula: Fs = (Fm / 256) / N, where N is an integer between 1 and 31, where Fm is the internal time base. By default Fm is 13.1072 MHz.

Question: Does the NI-9234 have software selectable AC/DC coupling?

Answer: Yes, the Sound and Vibration Input Module has software selectable AC/DC coupling, whereas some other models in the C Series do not have this capability.
