National Instruments NI-9144 Expansion CompactRIO Chassis

The NI-9144 Expansion CompactRIO Chassis by National Instruments can be incorporated with the LabVIEW FPGA Module, given its 2M gate Xilinx Spartan FPGA. (Part Numbers: 780438-01, 780438-02) This allows high-speed and customizable I/O timing, inline processing, and closed-loop control. This CompactRIO Chassis also features a scan mode that can be configured to quickly perform an extension of the user’s real-time system. This model has two part numbers: part number 780438-01 does not have conformal coating, while part number 780438-02 does have conformal coating. Multiple NI-9144 Expansion Chassis can be daisy-chained from the master controller to expand applications that are time-critical to high channel counts, while maximizing the utility of processor resources in maintaining hard determinism.

All I/O modules are automatically synchronized in each Chassis and are also synchronized with each other. By plugging in additional modules, the NI-9144 EtherCat Chassis becomes a versatile modular expansion system that can integrate multiple measurement types and channels when the user plugs in additional I/O modules. Individually, the modules contain inherent signal conditioning and isolation for industrial signal measurement types. Additionally, the device has 8 slots.

To operate the NI-9144, a variety of software is required. They must be installed in the following order: LabVIEW 2016 or later versions, LabVIEW 2016 Real-Time Module or later versions, NI CompactRIO Device Drivers August 2016 or later versions, NI-Industrial Communications for EtherCat 16.1 or later versions, LabVIEW 2016 FPGA Module or later versions. The NI-9144 can be connected to a NI master controller by using a category 5 Ethernet cable. Before the connection is carried out, the NI master controller must be connected to a network.

National Instruments recommends that the PS-15 Industrial Power Supply be used with the NI-9144. This power supply boasts 24 VDC and an input range of 100 VAC to 120 VAC/200 VAC to 240 VAC. In a storage environment, the NI-9144 Expansion Chassis ambient temperature is from 40 °C to 85 °C. The operating shock is at 30 g, 11 ms half sine; 50 g, 3 ms half sine. The device is equipped with an EtherCat bus connector. The device weighs 32.7 oz and has the dimensions: 11.28 x 3.47 x 2.32 in.

The product lifecycle status of the NI-9144 has been declared as Obsolete by National Instruments, but the cRIO Expansion Chassis will be bought, sold, or repaired by Apex Waves in perpetuity. Request a quote today!

National Instruments NI-9144 Frequently Asked Questions

Question: The EtherCAT Master Device isn't showing up during setup. What should I do?

Answer: If the EtherCAT Master Device isn't showing up in the "add targets and devices" dropdown menu during setup, uninstall and then reinstall the Industrial Communications for EtherCat driver from the host computer. You also have to make sure that the Master Device is on the same subnet as both the host computer and controller. NI-RIO, NI Scan Engine, and NI-Industrial Communications for EtherCAT driver software should be installed on the Master NI Rio-9074. All Driver versions must be the same, and need to be the same as the version of Labview you are using.

Question: What type of FPGA does the NI-9144 have?

Answer: The FPGA is a programmable 2M gate Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA.

Question: What type of network interface does the NI-9144 have?

Answer: The CompactRIO Chassis has a 100BaseTX Ethernet interface.

Question: Which type of power supply is suggested for use with the NI-9144?

Answer: It is suggested to use a 48 W, 24 VDC power supply with the cRIO Chassis.

Question: How many channels are there for one NI-9144?

Answer: The Chassis has as many as 256 analog input channels, 128 analog output channels, or 256 digital I/O channels.
