National Instruments PCI-4472B Sound and Vibration Device
National Instruments' PCI-4472B (Part Numbers: 779683-01, 779682-01) is a data acquisition module designed specifically for applications involving sound and vibration. Accurate frequency-domain measurements are made possible by its eight dynamic signal acquisition channels. With its software-configurable AC/DC coupling and integrated electronic piezoelectric (IEPE) conditioning, the device guarantees precision when used with transducers such as accelerometers and microphones.
Applications include monitoring machine condition, noise and vibration diagnostics, and audio testing and measuring. The PCI-4472B is an excellent choice for high-fidelity signal acquisition due to its 102.4 kS/s sampling rate and 0.5 Hz AC/DC cutoff frequency. The dynamic range of the device measures 111 dB with sample rates between 1.0 kS/s and 51.2 kS/s and 99 dB for sample rates that are between 51.2 kS/s and 102.4 kS/s.
The PCI-4472B makes use of delta-sigma modulating A/D converters (ADCs) with oversampling to ensure linearity and reduce noise and distortion. Accurate measurements for vibration and audio analysis are made possible by the ADCs' 24-bit resolution.
With its eight analog input channels, this device allows for simultaneous sampling. It supports multiple triggering modes, including external digital triggering, essential for acquiring transient signals such as vibrations resulting from mechanical impacts. Furthermore, the ability to synchronize allows several PCI-4472B devices to work together precisely in terms of timing and phase matching. The channel features of the sound and vibration device include a 1 MΩ positive input impedance and a pseudodifferential input arrangement. Its amplifier attributes include an AC/DC software-selectable input coupling and gain accuracy of ±0.1 dB.
Minimal interference is ensured by crosstalk values between neighboring channels being below -90 dB. A software-enabled constant current source that provides 4 mA with ±5% precision and 24 V compliance facilitates signal conditioning. Signal integrity is guaranteed by the output impedance exceeding 250 kΩ at 1 kHz and current noise staying below 500 pA.
While the PCI-4472B is no longer directly available from National Instruments (NI), the Sound and Vibration Device will remain available with Apex Waves for both repairs and purchase in perpetuity!
