National Instruments PXI-6602 Counter/Timer Module
The PXI-6602 (Part number: 777557-01, 185745-01, 185745J-01, 185745M-01L) Counter/Timer Module manufactured by National Instruments has the capability to complete a wide variety of functions, including: frequency measurements, encoder position measurements, period measurements, event counting, pulse-train and pulse generation, and pulse-width measurements. Three high-speed DMA transfers can be accomplished at the same time, without needing DMA resources from the user’s computer. This Counter/Timer Module comes equipped with TTL/CMOS-compatible digital I/O, digital debouncing filters, six trigger lines, 32 bits resolution, static data transfer, and eight up/down counters/timers. It has a measure and source frequency of 80 MHz. Part number 185745-01 is for the board only kit version of the PXI-6602.
PXI-compatible products, such as the PXI-6602, can be used with CompactPCI devices. However, if the PXI-6602 was to be used in a CompactPCI Chassis, then only elementary plug-in device functions would be accessible. Functions explicitly for the PXI would not be obtainable.
One of the features offered on the PXI-6602 Counter/Timer Module is prescaling. This feature permits the counter to count a signal that is quicker than the counter’s highest timebase. The counters on the National Instruments PXI-6602 Counter/Timer module can provide 8X or 2X prescaling on every counter. The prescaling feature can also be deactivated if the user chooses. Every prescaler is comprised of a tiny, basic counter that counts to eight or two, then rolls over. This counter is created for this application because it can count signals that are quicker than the regular use counters. Prescaling is meant to be utilized with two counter period and frequency measurements when the measurement is performed on an ongoing, repeating signal.
The PXI-6602 is run using the NI-DAQmx driver software which is compatible with software packages/application development environments (ADEs) such as LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, or Measurement Studio. The NI device measures 6.3 inches x 3.9 inches in physical dimensions. It has a recommended operating temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C, a storage temperature range of –20 °C to 70 °C, and an operating and non-operating random vibration of 0.3 grms and 2.4 grms respectively–at a frequency range of 5 to 500 Hz.
