This device features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7400 (2.16 GHz dual-core), a Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset, and an Intel GMA 950 graphics media accelerator. This Controller has all standard and extended PC I/O ports in one unit. With several I/O ports available on the PXI-8106, almost all active slots on the chassis remain available for control and measurement modules. The device is equipped with a CompactPCI-based PXI backplane and a 4 MB L2 cache.

This one-piece rugged Controller helps minimize integration related issues and eliminates the requirement for complicated cabling to daughter boards. The NI PXI-8106 Embedded Controller comes equipped with four Hi-Speed USB ports (for connecting a mouse or a keyboard) and one IEEE 1284 ECP/EPP (to connect to a broad range of devices such as printers, scanners, and tape backup drives). In addition, the PXI-8106 Controller has an RS232 port available for coupling to serial devices and can utilize a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive for OS or other software installation. This Embedded Controller comes equipped with an integrated GPIB (IEEE 488) controller for the controlling of external instrumentation.

The NI PXI-8106 operates using the NI-DAQmx driver hardware in conjunction with application development environments such as LabWindows/CVI, LabVIEW, and Measurement Studio. The device is also compatible with the NI-VISA software which is an API used for communicating and controlling instruments such as Serial, PXI, USB, GPIB among many others.

For optimal video performance, the NI PXI-8106 features an Intel GMA 950 graphics media accelerator- a unique arrangement that provides optimized memory resources usage between the system and the graphics for smooth performance. Additionally, there is a DVI-I video connector provided, which is compatible with analog VGA and digital DVI. Users with analog monitors can utilize the DVI-I to VGA adapter, which can be purchased separately as an accessory. The instrument has a weight of 2.1 lbs., and the dimensions: 3.2 x 5.1 x 8.5 in.

National Instruments has announced the Obsolete Status for the PXI-8106, but the PXI Controller will still be available for purchase and repairs with Apex Waves in perpetuity.
