Featured with an integrated GPIB (IEEE 488.2) interface, the National Instruments PXI-8186 (Part Numbers: 778755-00, 778755-01, 778755-02, 778755-33, 778842-00, 778842-01, 778842-02, 778842-33) is a Pentium 4 based Embedded Controller that can be used in any PXI or CompactPCI system. The powerful hardware configuration of this Controller makes it a viable solution for a broad range of intensive applications. The NI PXI-8186 comes equipped with a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4-M CPU and a 30 GB hard drive.
To deliver realistic, intense 3D graphics, fast rendering, high detail, and smooth motion, the PXI-8186 Controller features an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics core. Thus, the user will not need an additional video card. This Controller utilizes double-data-rate SDRAM (DDR-SDRAM). The SDRAM doubles memory bandwidth since it transfers data twice per cycle. The NI PXI-8186 comes equipped with one 10/100BaseTX Port, one IEEE 1284 Parallel Port, one PCI-GPIB/TNT Port, two USB 2.0 Ports, one PS/2 connector, two Serial Ports, and a 2.5 in., 9.5 mm 30 GB Internal Hard Drive.
The standard version of the NI PXI-8186 has an operating temperature of 5 to 40 °C. However, this PXI Embedded Controller is also offered in an extended-temperature version (Part Number: 778842-01), which has an operating temperature of 0 to 55 °C. As far as its physical dimensions are concerned, it is a 3U-size PXI module, with dimensions of 8.1 by 13 by 21.6 cm. Also, the device has a weight of 2.2 lbs. The NI PXI-8186 requires one system slot and three controller slots to be installed in a compatible PXI chassis.
The PXI-8186 operates using multiple software options. One of them is NI-DAQ which hosts a library of functions which can be utilized from your application development environment (ADE) of choice-ADEs such as LabVIEW, Measurement Studio, and LabWindows/CVI. Another software which the device operates on is the NI-VISA which is in creating applications and instrument drivers.
Obsolete Status has been announced for the PXI-8186 by National Instruments, but the Controller will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.
