National Instruments PXI-8196 Embedded Controller
The National Instruments PXI-8196 is a high-performance, microprocessor-based Embedded Controller designed for use in PXI systems. This controller (Part Numbers: 779911-00, 779911-01, 779912-00, 779912-01) is powered by a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium M 760 processor and includes 512 MB of DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 1 GB or 2 GB using two DDR2 SO-DIMM modules. It also features a 30 GB or larger internal hard drive with a Fast Ultra ATA100 interface, making it well-suited for data-intensive applications.
The PXI-8196 includes an integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 and provides an external SMB connector that can function as either a trigger input/output or watchdog timer. This SMB connector allows users to pass timing and trigger signals to and from the PXI trigger bus within a PXI system. Additionally, the PXI-8196 is equipped with a PCI-based GPIB controller and an ExpressCard/34 slot for system expansion.
This Embedded Controller is offered in two environmental configurations. The standard version operates within a temperature range of 5 to 50 °C, while the extended-temperature version supports an operating range from 0 to 55 °C. Both models are reliable solutions for a range of demanding industrial and laboratory settings.
The PXI-8196 supports a variety of National Instruments software platforms, including LabVIEW, Measurement Studio, and LabWindows/CVI. It is also compatible with NI-VISA, a uniform API used to communicate with and control a wide range of instruments across serial, GPIB, VXI, and PXI interfaces.
In terms of connectivity, the PXI-8196 provides a broad set of standard and extended I/O options. These include a VGA port (15-pin DSUB) for video output, a COM1 serial port (9-pin DSUB), an Ethernet port (RJ45), a parallel port (36-pin champ), and a USB interface consisting of four stacked 4-pin Series A ports. It also includes a GPIB interface (25-pin Micro D), a trigger input/output port (SMB), and an ExpressCard/34 slot. While the PXI-8196 does not have a native PS/2 connector, a PS/2 keyboard and mouse can still be used with the help of a USB Y-splitter cable.
While National Instruments has announced the PXI-8196 as Obsolete, the PXI controller remains available for purchase with Apex Waves. Our comprehensive and continued support services assist with factory calibration or board/component level repairs in perpetuity.
