The NI 779497-01 utilizes the IEEE 1588-2008 precision time protocol for clock and event synchronization with other IEEE 1588-based devices. It can function as either a master or slave clock module within the IEEE 1588 network. An onboard FPGA automatically adjusts the frequency and phase of its IEEE 1588 clock. Synchronization with other IEEE 1588-capable devices is facilitated through its built-in Ethernet port.
Additionally, this device can synchronize events with non-1588 devices, like traditional instruments or PLCs, using general-purpose PFI lines and SMB connectors on the PCI bracket. Furthermore, the Real-Time System Integration (RTSI) interface enables synchronization with other PCI instruments within the same PC. The IEEE 1588 PCI Card leverages PFI (Programmable Function Interface) lines to synchronize events with non-1588 instruments like PLCs or traditional devices via SMB connectors on the PCI bracket. RTSI facilitates synchronization with other PCI instruments in the same host machine.
On its front panel, the NI 779497-01 features an RJ-45 Ethernet Connector, three PFI Connectors (PFI0, PFI1, and PFI2), and LEDs indicating Ethernet link status and speed. Beyond Ethernet synchronization and signal generation, the 779497-01 can also timestamp incoming signals. The Ethernet port on this device automatically negotiates to achieve the best speed—either 10 or 100 Mbps. Operating the NI device requires the NI-Sync driver software, which is compatible with various application development environments (ADEs) including LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, or Visual C/C++.
