This device works with NI-VXI and NI-VISA driver software, which are useful for troubleshooting, debugging VXI systems, and programming libraries. The recommended software for this controller includes LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and Measurement Studio. It connects a PCI-based computer to the VXIbus using the IEEE 1394 (FireWire) high-speed serial bus. It also includes VXI Slot 0 capabilities, such as a resource manager. With the NI VXI-1394 kit, your computer can function as though it were directly connected to the VXI backplane, similar to an embedded computer.
The NI 778118-01 supports a maximum sustained throughput of 11 Mbytes/s across the1394 bus. This module includes multiple I/O connectors: three 6-pin 1394 connectors, three SMB connectors, and one optional GPIB connector. It requires a single VXI C-size slot for installation and is fully compatible with the VXI specification. The module falls under the Class 1 TTL VXI keying class. Additionally the 778118-01 offers hot plug-in capability, allowing you to add and configure 1394 instruments without powering down the system. Multiple 1394 instruments can be connected in a tree topology; however, increasing the complexity of the bus topology may reduce overall system performance. This IEEE 1394 Remote Controller supports two-way VXI transfers.
